The Logos mask

After her study history of art, Everdina Hoffman-Klerkx (*1927) assisted with the restauration of a medieval church in Utrecht, where she lived. There she came across the image of a Green Man, the ‘foliage mask’. Several years later, she discovered two of them in the church of her new home-town in the Betuwe. Intrigued by this figure, she started to investigate the subject, and together with her husband, she visited churches all over Europe. This resulted in a collection of photographs, which is partly reproduced in this book. She coined the term ‘Logos mask’, because in churches this figure refers to Christ, the divine Logos (Jh. 1,1).
